Pillow tops earn their keep for side sleepers and for anyone who wants the surface to give before the support does. The Kokanee layers soft foams into a sewn-on pillow top over a coil unit, so you land in the mattress rather than on it, and your shoulder and hip stop arguing with each other.

Under that plush top, a zoned Ncompass coil unit carries the load and keeps air moving through the mattress, which is the advantage a coil build still holds over solid foam. Sound Sleep makes it in Lacey, Washington, the same corner of the state as our showroom. It comes in queen and king. Best for side and combination sleepers who want a cradling surface without giving up the support and airflow of a coil unit.
